Bosch Washing Machine E17 Error Code: Meaning and How to Fix It

What the Bosch E17 or F17 code means, the safe tap, hose and inlet filter checks you can do yourself, and when to call an engineer.

Bosch washing machine E17 error code guide: water supply checks for tap, inlet hose and filter

The E17 code on a Bosch washing machine means the water supply time has been exceeded: the machine did not take in enough water within the time it allows for filling, so it stops the programme. This guide to the Bosch washing machine E17 error explains what the code means, the safe checks Bosch describes for water inlet problems, and the point where you should book an engineer.

Quick answer: E17 (shown as F17 on some models) means your Bosch washing machine did not fill with water in time. It is safe to check the tap is fully open, straighten the inlet hose, clean the inlet filter and test your water flow. If E17 returns after those checks, book an engineer.

What Does the Bosch E17 Error Code Mean?

E17 means “water supply time exceeded”. Bosch’s own E17 or F17 support page gives that definition and lists the same fault under two codes, E17 and F17, depending on the model and display.

Every wash starts with a fill stage. The machine opens its inlet valve and expects the water level in the drum to reach a set point within a time limit. If water arrives too slowly, or not at all, the timer runs out and the machine shows E17 instead of carrying on with a drum that is empty or only partly filled.

Bosch machines without a full display may show the same type of problem as a water tap symbol or a blinking light next to the tap symbol. Bosch’s water tap symbol guide describes that symbol as a problem with the water inlet, and the checks are the same as for E17. Code formats vary between models, so check the troubleshooting table in your instruction manual if your display shows something slightly different.

What Causes the E17 Error?

Most E17 faults come from the water supply rather than the machine itself. In rough order of how often they happen:

  1. The tap is closed or only partly open. This is the first fix Bosch gives for E17. Taps are often turned down after plumbing work or when a machine is moved.
  2. A kinked or trapped inlet hose. Pushing the machine back against the wall can fold the cold water fill hose and choke the flow.
  3. A blocked water inlet filter. A small mesh filter where the hose connects catches grit and scale. Over time it clogs and slows filling.
  4. Low water pressure. Bosch says a tap should deliver about 10 litres of water per minute. Less than that can stop the machine filling in time.
  5. A drain hose or siphon problem. Bosch’s UK guide to a washing machine that is not filling with water also lists a kinked or blocked waste water hose, so check both hoses.
  6. An inlet valve, pressure sensor or control fault. If the supply is good and E17 keeps returning, a part inside the machine may have failed. This needs an engineer.

How Do You Fix the E17 Error Yourself?

These steps follow Bosch’s guidance for E17 and for the water tap symbol. Have a towel and a bucket ready, because some water will escape when you remove the hose.

Check the tap and the inlet hose

  1. Open the tap fully. Find the isolating tap or valve on the cold supply that feeds the machine and make sure it is turned fully on.
  2. Switch off and unplug the machine before moving it.
  3. Straighten the hose. Ease the machine slightly forward and untwist any kinks in the inlet hose. Check the drain hose for kinks at the same time.

Step by step: How Do You Fix the E17 Error Yourself?

Clean the water inlet filter

  1. Keep the machine unplugged and turn off the tap.
  2. Remove the inlet hose from the tap. Hold a towel or small bowl underneath to catch the water left in the hose.
  3. Clean the filter. Brush the small mesh filter with a small brush under running water until the holes are clear.
  4. Aqua-Secure models. On models with an Aqua-Secure hose, Bosch says the filter is removed from the rear of the machine using pliers. Follow your manual for this.
  5. Reconnect and check for leaks. Refit the hose hand tight, open the tap and look for drips before you plug the machine back in.

Test your water flow

  1. Close the tap and remove the inlet hose.
  2. Hold a bucket under the tap and open it fully for one minute.
  3. Measure the water. Bosch says about 10 litres should come out in a minute. If you collect much less, the supply is the problem and you need a plumber, not a washing machine engineer.
  4. Refit the hose, open the tap, plug in and restart. Run a short programme and watch whether water flows into the drum.

Safety: Always switch off and unplug the machine before touching hoses or filters, and never remove the casing or open the back panel. Stop at the tap, hoses, inlet filter and flow test. Inlet valves, pressure sensors, wiring and control boards are jobs for a qualified appliance engineer.

When Should You Call an Engineer?

Call an engineer when E17 comes back even though the tap is fully open, the hoses are straight, the inlet filter is clean and the flow test gives about 10 litres a minute. Bosch says that if the error cannot be put right, you should contact its customer service and arrange a repair appointment. You should also book an engineer straight away if you can hear the machine trying to fill but no water enters, if water leaks from the back of the machine, or if E17 appears on every wash. If the flow test is weak, call a plumber about your supply instead.

Which Other Bosch Codes Are Linked to Water Problems?

The table below lists related codes and symbols from Bosch’s own support pages, so you can tell a filling problem from a draining or leaking one.

If the drum will not turn rather than fill, our guide to the Bosch F21 error code covers that motor fault in the same step by step way.

How Can You Stop the E17 Error Coming Back?

  • Leave the tap fully open during washes, and check it after any plumbing work or after moving the machine.
  • Leave a gap behind the machine so the inlet and drain hoses can run in a smooth curve without folding.
  • Check the inlet filter now and then, especially in hard water areas or after work on the mains, when grit can be flushed through the pipes.
  • Avoid running the machine while a dishwasher, shower or garden hose is drawing heavily on the same supply, if your water pressure is already low.
  • Replace a damaged hose with the correct part for your model rather than a long extension that can kink.

Once the machine is filling normally again, you can use our electricity cost calculator to work out what each wash costs to run, or read our guide on how to calculate appliance running costs for the method behind it.

Bosch Washing Machine E17 Error FAQs

What does E17 mean on a Bosch washing machine?

E17 means the water supply time has been exceeded. The machine expected the drum to fill within a set time and it did not, so it stopped. The usual causes are a closed tap, a kinked inlet hose, a blocked inlet filter or low water pressure.

Is E17 the same as F17 on a Bosch?

Yes. Bosch lists E17 and F17 together on one support page with the same meaning, water supply time exceeded. Which one you see depends on your model and its display, but the checks and fixes are the same for both codes.

How do I reset a Bosch washing machine after E17?

Fix the cause first, because the code returns if the machine still cannot fill. Open the tap fully, straighten the hose and clean the inlet filter. Then switch the machine off, wait a short time, switch it back on and select your programme again.

Where is the water inlet filter on a Bosch washing machine?

On most models the mesh filter sits where the inlet hose screws onto the tap, so you remove the hose from the tap to reach it. On Aqua-Secure models Bosch says the filter is at the rear of the machine and is removed with pliers. Check your manual for your model.

What water pressure does a Bosch washing machine need?

Bosch’s simple test is to open the tap fully into a bucket for one minute. About 10 litres should come out. If you collect much less, the supply is too weak for the machine to fill in time and you should contact a plumber.

Can I still use my Bosch washing machine with E17?

Not until the cause is fixed. The machine stops because it cannot take in enough water to wash and rinse properly. If the simple checks do not clear E17, stop using it and book a repair, especially if you can hear it trying to fill without water arriving.
