HousyTools provides free calculators and guides to help you plan home projects and understand your bills. Please read this disclaimer before relying on any result.
Results Are Estimates Only
Every result on this site is an estimate based on the figures you enter and the formulas described on how our calculators work. Real quantities, costs and outputs depend on your home, the products you buy, how they are applied and many things a calculator cannot see. Always check product labels, data sheets and supplier quotes before you buy or book work.
Not Professional Advice
The content on HousyTools is general information. It is not professional, technical, financial or legal advice, and it does not replace a survey, inspection or quote from a qualified person who has seen your property.
When You Must Use a Professional
- Gas. In the UK, by law, any work on gas appliances, boilers, fires or pipework must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. You can check an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. More information is in the HSE advice on gas safety for home owners. In other countries, use the registered gas installer required where you live.
- Electrics. Electrical installation work, including new circuits, electric showers and electric underfloor heating, should be done by a qualified electrician. In England and Wales, much of this work is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations (Approved Document P) and must be certified or notified.
- Structure. Removing walls, cutting joists, adding loads to floors or roofs, or anything that affects how a building stands up needs a structural engineer, and may need building regulations approval.
- Heating systems. Our boiler and heat pump sizing tools give a guide range only. An installer should carry out a full heat loss survey before you choose a unit.
- Hazardous materials. Older homes may contain asbestos or lead paint. Do not sand, drill or scrape materials you are unsure about. See the HSE asbestos guidance.
If you smell gas in Great Britain, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away. In Northern Ireland, call 0800 002 001.
Prices and Rates Change
Energy rates, VAT rules, product prices and grants change over time. We recheck rates whenever Ofgem announces a new price cap period and at least every 3 months, and each page shows when it was last checked. Even so, figures on the site may be out of date by the time you read them. Use the rates on your own bill or quote where you can.
