What Is a Square Feet to Square Metres Converter?
A square feet to square metres converter is a tool that turns an area measured in imperial square feet into metric square metres, and back. The formula in plain words is: square metres = square feet x 0.09290304. For the reverse, square feet = square metres / 0.09290304, which is the same as multiplying by about 10.7639.
The factor is exact, not rounded. Since 1959 the international foot has been defined as exactly 0.3048 metres, so a square foot is 0.3048 x 0.3048 = 0.09290304 square metres. The NIST Guide to the SI lists this same value, and the Wikipedia article on the square foot gives it too.
How Do You Use the Square Feet to Square Metres Converter?
- Choose the Direction: “Square feet to square metres” or “Square metres to square feet”.
- Enter the number in Area (ft2 or m2): square feet for the first direction, square metres for the second. If you only have a length and width in feet, multiply them first.
- Read the result, then open “Show the formula and working” to see the exact factor and the same area in square yards, square inches, square centimetres, acres and hectares.
- Use the “Side of an equal square” figure to picture the area as a square room or plot.

How Many Square Metres Are in a Square Foot?
One square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square metres, a little under a tenth of a square metre. Turned around, one square metre is about 10.764 square feet. A handy mental check is to divide square feet by 10 and take off about 7%, so 500 sq ft is roughly 50 less 3.5, or 46.5 m², close to the exact 46.45 m².
How Do I Convert Room Dimensions in Feet to Square Metres?
Multiply the length by the width in feet to get square feet, then multiply by 0.09290304. A room 14 ft by 12 ft is 168 sq ft, which is 15.61 m². If you would rather start from metres, convert each side first (feet x 0.3048) and multiply. For room areas with alcoves or L shapes, the carpet calculator and other flooring calculators handle the shapes and wastage.
How Big Is 1,000 Square Feet in Square Metres?
1,000 square feet is 92.90 square metres, the same as a square about 9.64 metres along each side, or a rectangle of 10 m by 9.29 m. If a listing quotes square feet and you want to compare it with a UK Energy Performance Certificate, which gives the total floor area in square metres, this is the conversion to use.
Why Is Square Feet to Square Metres Not Just Divide by 3.28?
Because area uses the length factor twice: there are 3.2808 feet in a metre, so there are 3.2808 x 3.2808 = 10.764 square feet in a square metre. Dividing square feet by 3.28 instead of 10.764 gives an answer more than three times too large, which is one of the most common mistakes when ordering flooring, paint or turf from a plan in feet.

Worked Example: A Living Room
Example: a floor plan says a living room is 14 ft by 12 ft, and the flooring you like is priced per square metre. Multiply 14 x 12 = 168 sq ft, leave the Direction on “Square feet to square metres” and enter 168 in Area (ft2 or m2). The converter shows 168 x 0.09290304 = 15.61 m², or 18.67 square yards. You can take 15.61 m² straight into the laminate flooring calculator to add wastage and work out the packs to buy.
