Show the formula and working
This bed size converter shows people in the UK, Ireland and the rest of Europe which bed size in another country matches the mattress they already own, and works just as well for anyone buying a bed or bedding from the US or Australia. Pick your bed size or type in your mattress measurements, choose the country you are converting to, and it gives the closest named size, the gap in centimetres and the same size in inches.
Quick answer: A UK double (137 x 191 cm) matches a US full, a UK king (152 x 198 cm) matches a US queen, and a UK super king (183 x 198 cm) is as wide as a US California king. European beds are 200 cm long and 140, 160 or 180 cm wide. A bed size converter shows the exact gaps.

What Is a Bed Size Converter?
A bed size converter is a tool that compares the width and length of your mattress with the standard bed sizes used in another country and names the closest one. The formula in plain words: for every standard size in the target country, add the width gap to half the length gap, and the size with the smallest total is the match.
Width counts double because it decides whether a fitted sheet stretches over, whether a frame holds the mattress and whether two people have room. Length still matters, which is why the tool reports both gaps. The UK sizes come from the National Bed Federation figures listed in the bed size article on Wikipedia, and the US sizes are the International Sleep Products Association sizes from the same table. Inches are centimetres divided by 2.54.
How Do You Use the Bed Size Converter?
- Choose your bed in Your bed size. UK, EU, US and Australian sizes are listed, with the centimetre size shown for UK and EU beds.
- If your mattress is not a standard size, choose Custom mattress size and enter the Custom mattress width and Custom mattress length in centimetres. Measure the mattress, not the frame.
- Choose the country in Convert to: UK and Ireland, Continental Europe, United States and Canada, or Australia.
- Read the closest size and the width and length difference. The breakdown also lists the best match in all four regions.
- Read the result and open “Show the formula and working” to see how each size was scored.

Is a UK King the Same as a US King?
No: a UK king is 152 x 198 cm (5 ft x 6 ft 6 in), which is the width of a US queen, while a US king is 193 cm (76 in) wide, 41 cm wider than a UK king. The names line up one step apart. A UK double matches a US full, a UK king matches a US queen, and the US king is wider than even a UK super king. If you buy American sheets for a UK king, look for queen size.
What Is a European Double Bed Size?
A European double is usually 140 x 200 cm, and the common larger sizes are 160 x 200 cm and 180 x 200 cm. Continental beds are sold by their width and length in centimetres rather than by name, and the IKEA guide to bedding sizes lists 80, 90, 140, 160 and 180 cm widths, almost all 200 cm long. That makes them 9 cm longer than a UK double. A UK double fitted sheet (137 x 190 cm) will not reach the corners of a 140 x 200 cm mattress, so buy bedding in the same system as the mattress.
What Size Is a Super King Bed in Other Countries?
A UK super king is 183 x 198 cm (6 ft x 6 ft 6 in), which matches a European 180 x 200 cm bed and is the same width as a US California king. A US California king is 14 cm longer, at 212 cm, so its fitted sheets hang loose at the ends. A standard US king is 10 cm wider than a UK super king. In Australia the matching size is called a king (183 x 203 cm).
Why Do Bed Sizes Vary Between Brands?
Bed sizes vary by a few centimetres because most UK makers design in feet and inches and round the metric figure, and a tolerance of about 2 cm either way is normal. Some brands list a UK double as 135 x 190 cm and a king as 150 x 200 cm, which are the same beds described differently. Emperor beds have no agreed size at all: one UK maker lists 200 x 200 cm, while others sell wider mattresses, so always measure an emperor before buying sheets. The converter flags any match that is more than 4 cm out.

Worked Example: A UK King Bed Moving to the US
Example: a household moving from Leeds to Boston wants American bedding for a UK king mattress. Choose UK king (152 x 198 cm) in Your bed size and United States and Canada in Convert to. The converter shows US queen, 152 x 202 cm, with a width difference of 0 cm and a length difference of +4 cm, or 60 x 79.5 in. The width is identical, so a US queen fitted sheet goes on easily and the extra 4 cm of length simply tucks under. A US king sheet would have been 41 cm too wide.

Bed Size Converter FAQs
What size is a UK double bed in cm?
A UK double bed mattress is 137 x 191 cm, or 4 ft 6 in by 6 ft 3 in. Many retailers round this to 135 x 190 cm. The nearest US size is a full (136 x 189 cm) and the nearest European size is 140 x 200 cm.
Is a US queen bigger than a UK double?
Yes. A US queen is 152 x 202 cm, which is 15 cm wider and 11 cm longer than a UK double at 137 x 191 cm. A US queen is the same width as a UK king, so UK king bedding is the closer match for a queen bed.
What is the European equivalent of a UK king?
The closest European size to a UK king (152 x 198 cm) is 160 x 200 cm, which is 8 cm wider. Some European ranges, including IKEA, also sell 150 cm wide beds in certain countries. Measure the mattress, because a fitted sheet that is 8 cm too wide will sit loosely.
How do I measure my mattress for the converter?
Measure the top of the mattress from edge to edge across the width and from head to foot along the length, in centimetres. Do not measure the frame or headboard, which are larger. Enter both figures with Custom mattress size and the tool finds the nearest standard size.
Will a US twin sheet fit a UK single bed?
A US twin is 98 x 189 cm, about 7 cm wider than a UK single at 91 x 191 cm, so a twin fitted sheet goes on but sits slightly loose. It is usable, but a UK single or a European 90 x 200 cm sheet fits more neatly.
What is the biggest standard bed size?
Among common standard sizes, the Australian super king (204 x 204 cm) and UK emperor beds (about 200 cm or more wide) are the largest. The US king is 193 cm wide and the California king is the longest at 212 cm. Emperor sizes vary by maker.
