What Is a Pints to Ml Converter?
A pints to ml converter is a tool that changes a volume given in pints into the same volume in millilitres, using the legal definition of the pint you choose. The formula is simple: millilitres equal pints multiplied by the number of millilitres in one pint. For the reverse, pints equal millilitres divided by that same number.
The only hard part is knowing which pint a recipe means. In the UK the pint is one eighth of an imperial gallon, and the Weights and Measures Act 1985 fixes it at exactly 0.56826125 litres. The US liquid pint is one eighth of a US gallon of 231 cubic inches, which works out at 473.176473 ml. The UK pint holds 20 imperial fluid ounces, the US pint 16 US fluid ounces.
How Do You Use the Pints to Ml Converter?
- Choose the Direction: “Pints to ml” or “Ml to pints”.
- Set the Pint type. Use “UK imperial pint (568 ml)” for British and Irish recipes and milk cartons, and “US liquid pint (473 ml)” for American recipes.
- Type the Amount. Enter pints if you are converting pints to ml, or millilitres if you are converting ml to pints. Decimals such as 0.5 or 1.25 work.
- Read the result, plus litres and the same volume in the other pint type, then open “Show the formula and working” to see the multiplication step by step.

How Many Ml Are in a Pint in the UK?
A UK pint is 568 ml, or exactly 568.26125 ml. That is the figure behind a pint of milk from a British supermarket and a pint of draught beer or cider in a pub. A half pint is 284 ml and a quarter pint, sometimes called a gill, is 142 ml. Older British cookbooks that say “1 pint of stock” mean this imperial pint, so 568 ml is the right conversion.
How Many Ml Are in a US Pint?
A US liquid pint is 473 ml, or exactly 473.176473 ml, about 95 ml less than a UK pint. American recipes use it, and a US pint equals 2 US cups of 8 US fluid ounces each. If you follow an American recipe with UK pints, you will add about 20% too much liquid, which is enough to spoil a sauce, batter or custard.
Why Is a UK Pint Bigger Than a US Pint?
A UK pint is about 20% bigger because the two countries based their gallons on different standards and split them into a different number of fluid ounces. Britain redefined its gallon in 1824 as the imperial gallon, now 4.54609 litres. The United States kept an older wine gallon of 231 cubic inches. Both pints are an eighth of their gallon, so the size gap carries through. The fluid ounces differ too: an imperial fluid ounce is 28.41 ml and a US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml, as listed on the Wikipedia pint article.
How Many Pints Are in a Litre?
One litre is 1.76 UK pints or 2.11 US pints. So a 1 litre bottle of milk holds a little under one and three quarter UK pints, and a 2 litre bottle holds about 3.5 UK pints. Switch the Direction to “Ml to pints” and enter 1000 to check this yourself.

Worked Example: Converting a Custard Recipe
Example: an old British custard recipe asks for 1.5 pints of milk, and the measuring jug only shows millilitres. Leave the Direction on “Pints to ml”, keep the Pint type on “UK imperial pint (568 ml)” and enter 1.5 as the Amount. The converter multiplies 1.5 by 568.26125 and shows 852.4 ml, or 0.852 litres. Measuring 850 ml is close enough for custard. Picking the US pint by mistake would give only 709.8 ml.
