Show the formula and working
This picture hanging height calculator tells you exactly where to put the nail or hook so a picture, mirror or print hangs at eye level on an open wall or sits neatly above a sofa, sideboard or bed. It works in centimetres for UK and European homes, with an inch switch, and it allows for the hanging wire or D rings on the back of the frame, which is the step most people get wrong.
Quick answer: Hang the centre of the picture about 145 cm (57 in) above the floor. Add half the frame height for the top, then subtract the drop from the taut wire or D ring. For a 60 cm tall frame with an 8 cm drop, the picture hanging height calculator puts the nail at 167 cm.

What Is a Picture Hanging Height Calculator?
A picture hanging height calculator is a tool that converts a target picture position into the exact height for the nail or hook. On an open wall, it uses an eye level centre line: top of frame = centre height + half the frame height, and nail height = top of frame minus the hanger drop. Above furniture, it works upwards instead: bottom of frame = furniture height + gap, top of frame = bottom + frame height, and nail height = top minus the hanger drop.
It also finds the horizontal position: the centre line is half the width of the wall or piece of furniture you are centring on, and with two hooks each one sits half the hanger spacing either side of that line.
How Do You Use the Picture Hanging Height Calculator?
- Choose Where the picture hangs: an open wall, or above a sofa, sideboard or bed.
- For an open wall, keep Centre height from the floor at 145 cm or change it. Above furniture, enter Furniture height (above furniture only) and Gap above furniture.
- Measure the frame and enter Frame height and Frame width.
- Pull the wire up taut as if it were on the hook, or find the D ring, and measure down to the top of the frame. Enter that as Hanger drop from top of frame.
- Choose Hooks. For two hooks, enter Distance between the two hangers, measured between the D rings.
- Enter Wall or furniture width to centre on to get the position across the wall.
- Read the nail height and position, then open “Show the formula and working” to see each measurement.

How High Should You Hang a Picture on the Wall?
Hang a picture so its centre is about 145 cm, or 57 inches, above the floor. This is the gallery and museum convention, chosen because it is close to the average adult’s eye level, and it keeps every picture in a room on the same centre line whatever its size.
The rule is a starting point, not a law. In a room where people mostly sit, such as a dining room or snug, a slightly lower centre can feel better, and in a hallway with high ceilings a slightly higher one can. Change Centre height from the floor to suit. Older houses with a picture rail often hang pictures on cords from the rail instead, in which case you adjust the cord length to the same centre height.
How High Should a Picture Be Above a Sofa?
Leave a gap of about 15 cm to 25 cm between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame. That is close enough for the picture and sofa to read as one group, and high enough that heads do not knock the frame. The same gap works above a sideboard, console table or headboard.
Choose a picture or group that is clearly narrower than the furniture below it, so the furniture frames it. If the eye level rule and the furniture rule disagree, the furniture rule wins, because a picture floating high above a sofa looks disconnected.
Where Do You Put the Nail for a Picture with a Wire?
Put the nail below the top of the frame by the distance from the taut wire to the frame top. Hook a finger or tape measure under the wire, pull it up as it would sit on the nail, and measure from that point to the top edge. A wire with a lot of slack can drop 10 cm or more, which is why measuring it matters.
Before drilling, check the spot with a cable and pipe detector, and follow sensible drill safety such as the Electrical Safety First advice on drills. If you are redecorating at the same time, our paint calculator works out the paint for the wall before the pictures go up.
Nail Heights for Common Frame Sizes
The table uses a 145 cm centre line on an open wall, the same as the calculator’s default.
| Frame height | Top of frame | Nail height, 5 cm hanger drop | Nail height, 10 cm hanger drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 cm | 160 cm | 155 cm | 150 cm |
| 40 cm | 165 cm | 160 cm | 155 cm |
| 50 cm | 170 cm | 165 cm | 160 cm |
| 60 cm | 175 cm | 170 cm | 165 cm |
| 80 cm | 185 cm | 180 cm | 175 cm |
| 100 cm | 195 cm | 190 cm | 185 cm |
Worked Example: A Landscape Print
Example: a framed print 80 cm wide and 60 cm tall is going on an open living room wall 2.4 m wide. The wire on the back, pulled taut, sits 8 cm below the top of the frame, and the plan is one central hook at the usual 145 cm centre height.
- Top of frame: 145 cm + 60 cm / 2 = 175 cm.
- Nail height: 175 cm minus 8 cm = 167 cm from the floor.
- Across the wall: 240 cm / 2 = 120 cm from the left edge.
If the same print moved above an 85 cm high sofa with a 20 cm gap, the bottom of the frame would sit at 105 cm, the top at 165 cm and the nail at 157 cm. For the rest of the room, the home calculators cover rugs, curtains and room sizes.
Picture Hanging Height Calculator FAQs
What is the 57 inch rule for hanging pictures?
The 57 inch rule says the centre of a picture should sit 57 inches, about 145 cm, above the floor. Galleries use it because it is close to average adult eye level, and following it in every room keeps pictures of different sizes on one consistent centre line.
How high should a mirror be hung?
A decorative mirror follows the same 145 cm centre rule as a picture. A mirror you use to check your face should be placed so the main users see their face near its centre, so measure their eye height and use that as the centre height.
How do you hang a gallery wall at the right height?
Treat the whole group as one large picture. Measure the total height of the arrangement, put its centre at about 145 cm, and enter that total height as the frame height. Then position each frame within the group, keeping the gaps between frames even.
Should pictures be hung at the same height in every room?
Keeping the same centre line throughout a home looks calm and deliberate, especially where you can see from one room into another. Change it only where furniture sets the height, such as above a sofa or bed, or where people are mostly seated.
When should I use two hooks instead of one?
Use two hooks for wide or heavy frames, mirrors and anything that keeps tilting on a single nail. Two hooks spread the weight and hold the frame level. Fix them at the same height, the hanger spacing apart, centred on the wall or furniture.
What fixings should I use for a heavy picture?
Check the weight rating printed on the hook or fixing packet and choose one rated well above the picture’s weight. Plasterboard walls need cavity fixings or a stud, and masonry walls need a wall plug. Always check for hidden cables and pipes before drilling.
