About HousyTools

HousyTools is a free website of home calculators for homeowners and renters in the UK, Ireland and the rest of Europe. The tools answer practical questions before you buy or book anything: how much paint a room needs, how many boxes of tiles to order, what a gas bill should come to, or how big a radiator should be.

Who HousyTools Is For

The site is written for people doing their own planning at home: first time buyers, renters checking a bill, DIY decorators, and anyone comparing a quote from a tradesperson. Every tool works in metric by default, has an imperial switch where people still measure in feet and inches, and shows prices in pounds or euros.

The calculators are grouped into four categories:

How Our Calculators Are Built and Tested

  1. Formulas come from primary sources. Rates come from regulators such as Ofgem and Eurostat, conversion factors from GOV.UK, and coverage figures from manufacturer data sheets. Where a figure depends on your product, such as paint coverage, it is an input you can change, with a labelled example default.
  2. Every worked example is checked by running the calculator. The numbers in each worked example and FAQ are produced by the live tool with the stated inputs, then checked by hand against the formula.
  3. Odd inputs are tested. Each tool is tried with zero, empty and unrealistic values, so it shows a clear message instead of a wrong answer.
  4. Rates are rechecked when regulators change them. Energy prices are updated whenever Ofgem announces a new price cap period, and every page carries a “Checked” date with the sources used.

The full formulas, defaults and limitations are set out on how our calculators work, and the rules we write by are in our editorial policy.

Independence

HousyTools does not accept paid placements, sponsored results or payment to change a figure. Brand names such as paint or boiler makers appear only where we cite their own published data, and their mention is not an endorsement or a partnership. If the site carries advertising or affiliate links in future, they will be labelled and will never decide what a calculator shows.

Who Runs HousyTools

HousyTools is run by HousyTools editorial team.

What HousyTools Is Not

Our results are estimates to help you plan. They are not a survey, a quote or professional advice. Gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer and electrical work by a qualified electrician. Please read our disclaimer before relying on any figure.
