Show the formula and working
This wallpaper paste calculator works out how many packets or tubs of wallpaper paste you need, either from the number of rolls you have bought or straight from the size of the room. It is built for UK and European rolls of about 10 m by 0.53 m, with a feet and inches switch, and it uses the roll count printed on the paste label, so it works for any brand, packet size or paper weight.
Quick answer: Divide the number of wallpaper rolls by the rolls one packet hangs, as printed on the label, and round up. A 4 m by 3 m room with 2.4 m walls needs 7 standard rolls, so one 10 roll packet is enough. The wallpaper paste calculator can also work out the rolls from the room size first.

What Is a Wallpaper Paste Calculator?
A wallpaper paste calculator is a tool that converts the amount of wallpaper you are hanging into the number of paste packets or ready mixed tubs to buy. Paste makers label each pack by the number of rolls it hangs, so the formula in plain words is: packets = rolls x (1 + any extra allowance) / rolls per packet, rounded up.
If you do not know the rolls yet, the tool works them out using the drop method: drops = wall width / roll width, rounded up; drops per roll = roll length / (wall height + 10 cm trim), rounded down; rolls = drops / drops per roll, rounded up. Most powdered pastes are cellulose based, a use described in the Wikipedia article on methyl cellulose.
How Do You Use the Wallpaper Paste Calculator?
- If you already know how many rolls you are hanging, enter them in Rolls of wallpaper (if you know) and skip to step 4.
- Otherwise enter the Room perimeter and Wall height, and any Width of doors and windows to skip.
- Check the Roll length and Roll width on the roll label.
- Enter the Rolls per packet or tub (from the label) for the paste you will use.
- Add an Extra paste allowance if you will size the walls first or the walls are porous.
- Read the packets or tubs needed, then open “Show the formula and working” to see each step.

How Many Rolls Does a Packet of Wallpaper Paste Hang?
Each packet states how many rolls it hangs, and UK merchants sell common sizes such as 10 roll and 20 roll packs. The number assumes standard rolls of about 10 m by 0.53 m and the paper type the paste is made for. Heavy vinyls, textured and embossed papers need a stronger paste, often with a lower roll count per packet, so always read the label for your paper.
| Rolls of wallpaper | 5 roll packets | 10 roll packets | 20 roll packets |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| 8 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| 12 | 3 | 2 | 1 |
| 16 | 4 | 2 | 1 |
| 24 | 5 | 3 | 2 |
The table rounds up to whole packets with no extra allowance. Our wallpaper calculator works out the rolls for patterned papers in more detail.
How Many Rolls of Wallpaper Do I Need for a 4 m by 3 m Room?
A 4 m by 3 m room with 2.4 m high walls needs 7 standard rolls of 10.05 m by 0.53 m wallpaper with no pattern to match. The walls measure 14 m round, which is 27 drops, and each roll gives 4 drops of 2.5 m including trim. Patterned papers need more, because each drop is cut to line up the pattern. The Wikipedia article on wallpaper gives European rolls as about 52 cm wide and 10 m long, so always use the size on your own roll label.
Do You Need to Size Walls Before Wallpapering?
Sizing means brushing a diluted coat of paste onto bare plaster or porous walls before hanging, so the paper slides into place and the wall does not suck the paste dry. Many paste packets give a sizing mix on the label. If you plan to size, add an extra paste allowance such as 20% to 30%, or follow the label’s own sizing quantity. Lining paper over poor walls is another option, and the lining paper calculator counts those rolls.
What Is the Difference Between Packet Paste and Ready Mixed Paste?
Packet paste is a powder or flakes you mix with cold water, while ready mixed paste comes in a tub and is used straight away. Ready mixed tubs are convenient for small jobs and paste the wall papers, and packet paste is usually cheaper for a whole room. Both are labelled by the number of rolls they hang, so the calculator works the same way for either.
Worked Example: Paste for a 4 m by 3 m Bedroom
Example: a bedroom 4 m by 3 m has walls 2.4 m high, papered with standard 10.05 m by 0.53 m rolls and no doors deducted. The paste is a packet that hangs 10 rolls, with no extra allowance. These are the calculator’s default inputs.
- Drops: 14 m perimeter / 0.53 m = 26.4, so 27 drops.
- Drop length: 2.4 m + 0.1 m trim = 2.5 m, so 10.05 m / 2.5 m = 4 drops per roll.
- Rolls: 27 / 4 = 6.75, so 7 rolls.
- Paste: 7 rolls / 10 rolls per packet = 0.7, so 1 packet, with spare capacity for 3 more rolls.
If you size the walls first and add a 30% allowance, the paste is needed for 9.1 rolls, which still fits in one 10 roll packet.
Wallpaper Paste Calculator FAQs
How much wallpaper paste do I need for one room?
Most rooms need one or two packets. Work out the rolls first, then divide by the roll count on the packet. A 4 m by 3 m room with 2.4 m walls takes 7 standard rolls, so one 10 roll packet is enough.
Can I use the same paste for all wallpapers?
No. Standard papers suit an all purpose paste, while heavy vinyls, textured and embossed papers need a heavy duty paste, and paste the wall papers need paste suitable for that method. Check the wallpaper label, which usually names the paste type.
How much water do I mix with wallpaper paste?
Use the water quantity printed on the packet, as it changes with the paste brand and the paper type. Mixing the paste too thin weakens it and can leave seams lifting, while too thick a mix is hard to spread evenly.
Does paste the wall wallpaper need less paste?
Paste the wall papers are pasted on the wall rather than the back of each length. The paste per roll is not necessarily less, so follow the roll count on the paste label for that method rather than assuming you can buy less.
Should I buy extra wallpaper paste?
A little spare is useful for re sticking seams and corners, and for sizing porous walls. The calculator shows the spare capacity left in your packets. If that is under one roll, consider adding an extra allowance or buying one more small packet.
Can I keep mixed wallpaper paste for the next day?
Many mixed pastes keep for a short time if covered, but the time varies by product. Check the packet for how long mixed paste lasts and how to store it, and mix only what you need for the day if you are unsure.
