The IE code on an LG washing machine means the water supply is inadequate: the machine is not getting enough water into the drum, or the water pressure is too low. This guide to the LG washing machine IE error explains what the code means, the safe checks you can make at the tap and hose, and when to stop and call a qualified technician.
Quick answer: IE means your LG washing machine is not getting enough water. It is usually a tap that is turned off, a kinked inlet hose or a clogged inlet filter. You can safely check all three. If the code comes back with the tap open and good water pressure, call a technician.

What Does the LG IE Error Code Mean?
IE is a water inlet fault. LG’s washer error code list says IE means “the water supply is inadequate”, and explains that water is not being supplied to the washer or that the water pressure is too low.
At the start of a wash, the machine opens its inlet valve and watches the water level rise. If the level does not reach the expected point in the time allowed, the cycle stops and IE appears. The drum may be empty, or there may be a small amount of water in it, depending on how far the fill got.
IE is a supply fault, not a drain fault. If your machine is struggling to empty rather than fill, it will usually show OE instead, which is covered in our guide to the LG OE error code.
What Causes the IE Error?
Most IE errors come from something between your water pipe and the machine. In rough order of how often they happen:
- Tap turned off or only part open. This is common after a new installation, plumbing work or a holiday.
- Kinked or squashed inlet hose. Pushing the machine back against the wall can fold the hose.
- Clogged inlet filter. A small mesh filter where the hose meets the machine catches grit and limescale, and LG notes that a blocked filter reduces water flow.
- Low water pressure. LG states that pressure must be between 14.5 and 116 psi, which is roughly 1 to 8 bar. Works in the street, a shared supply or a weak mains can drop pressure below this.
- Frozen supply. In winter, a hose or pipe in an unheated garage or outbuilding can freeze. LG uses a separate FF code when the machine itself detects freezing.
- Faulty inlet valve or pressure sensor. If water is reaching the machine at good pressure but it still shows IE, a part inside may have failed. This needs a technician.

How Do You Fix the IE Error Yourself?
These steps follow the checks LG gives for IE. You will need a towel, a small bowl and an old toothbrush.
- Switch off and unplug the machine. Do this before you touch the hose or filter.
- Check the tap. Find the washing machine valve, usually under the sink or behind the machine, and make sure it is fully open. On a lever valve, the lever normally runs in line with the pipe when open.
- Check the water at another tap. Run the kitchen cold tap. If the flow is weak there too, the problem is your supply, not the machine.
- Check the inlet hose. Ease the machine forward and look for kinks, folds or crushed sections. Straighten the hose or reinstall it so it runs without sharp bends.
- Clean the inlet filter. Turn the tap off, put a towel down and unscrew the hose from the back of the machine. Catch any water in the bowl. Look into the inlet: if the mesh filter is clogged, clean it gently with a toothbrush under running water. Refit it and screw the hose back on firmly by hand.
- Turn the tap back on and check for leaks. Look at both ends of the hose for drips before going further.
- Test it. Plug in, switch on and start a short programme with no laundry. If the drum fills and no code appears, the fault is cleared.

Safety: Always switch off and unplug the washing machine before you touch the inlet hose or filter, and turn the water off first. Stop at the tap, hose and inlet filter checks. Do not remove the casing or test the inlet valve, pressure sensor or wiring: these jobs need a qualified appliance technician or LG’s own service. Never use a naked flame or heat gun on a frozen pipe.
When Should You Call an Engineer?
Call a qualified technician, or contact LG UK support if the machine is under warranty, when:
- The tap is fully open, the hose is straight and the filter is clean, but IE still appears.
- You can hear a click or hum at the start of the cycle but no water flows into the drum.
- Water keeps flowing into the drum when the machine is switched off. Turn the tap off and leave it off until it is repaired.
- The inlet hose is split, bulging or leaking at the connection.
If the water pressure is low at every tap in the house, LG suggests speaking to a plumber, and your water supplier can tell you about any local works or pressure problems. Check your warranty before booking an independent repair, and ask for a quote before any work starts, because repair costs vary by model and area.
Which LG Codes Are Related to IE?
The table lists other codes from LG’s washer error code list that are often confused with IE. Code lists vary by model, so check your owner’s manual for your machine.
| Code | What LG says it means | Who fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| IE | Water supply is inadequate | You first (tap, hose, filter), then a technician |
| OE | Water cannot drain | You first (drain hose, drain filter), then a technician |
| FE | Washer is overfilling, usually a faulty water valve | Technician |
| PE | Water level sensor malfunction | Technician if it persists after a power reset |
| FF | Unit is frozen | You (thaw gently), then a technician if it persists |
| UE | Laundry is unbalanced | You (rearrange the load) |
| dE | Door cannot lock | You (close the door fully), then a technician |
| LE | Motor is overloaded and locked | Technician if it persists |
How Can You Stop the IE Error Coming Back?
- Leave the tap fully open. A half open valve can be enough on a strong supply and not enough when pressure drops at busy times.
- Give the hoses room. When you push the machine back, check the inlet hose is not folded behind it.
- Check the inlet filter now and then. In hard water areas, limescale and grit build up faster.
- Protect against frost. If the machine is in a garage or outbuilding, insulate the pipe and hose and keep the space above freezing in winter.
- Replace tired hoses. A hose that is cracked, stiff or bulging should be replaced with one that suits your model.
Each failed start wastes a little water and electricity. To see what a full wash adds to your bill once the machine is working again, try the electricity cost calculator, or browse the energy bill calculators for other appliances.
LG Washing Machine Ie Error FAQs
How do I reset the IE error on my LG washing machine?
Fix the supply first, because a reset alone will not bring water in. Open the tap fully, straighten the hose and clean the inlet filter. Then switch off, unplug for a short while, plug back in and restart the programme. If water flows, the code clears.
Where is the inlet filter on an LG washing machine?
The inlet filter is a small mesh screen inside the water inlet at the back of the machine, where the fill hose screws on. Turn off the tap and unplug the machine before you unscrew the hose to reach it. Check your owner’s manual for your model.
What water pressure does an LG washing machine need?
LG’s help library gives a range of 14.5 to 116 psi, which is about 1 to 8 bar. Below that, the drum may fill too slowly and show IE. Your owner’s manual lists the exact range for your model.
Can low water pressure cause the IE code?
Yes. LG says IE can mean the water pressure is too low as well as no water at all. Run another cold tap in the house. If that is weak too, the problem is your supply, and a plumber or your water supplier can help.
Why does my LG washer show IE after a new installation?
The most common reasons are a tap that was never opened, a hose kinked when the machine was pushed into place, or packaging debris in the inlet filter. Check all three before calling the installer or a technician.
Can a frozen pipe cause the IE error?
Yes, a frozen supply pipe or hose stops water reaching the machine. Let the area warm up gently, never with a naked flame, and check for leaks once it thaws. If the machine shows FF, LG means the unit itself is frozen.
