Samsung Washing Machine 3E Error Code: Meaning and How to Fix It

What the 3E motor code means on a Samsung washing machine, the safe reset and load checks to try, and when the motor needs an engineer.

The 3E code on a Samsung washing machine means a motor issue: the control board has detected that the drive motor is not turning the drum as it should. This guide explains what the Samsung washing machine 3E error means, the safe checks you can make, and when a Samsung engineer needs to look at the motor.

Quick answer: 3E means a motor issue. It is safe to switch off at the mains, wait about a minute, reduce an overloaded drum and restart. If 3E returns with a normal load, stop using the machine and book a Samsung engineer, because the motor, its sensor and the control board are inside the casing.

What Does the Samsung 3E Error Code Mean?

3E means the washing machine has found a problem with its motor. Samsung UK lists 3C, 3E and 3E1 to 3E4 together as a “motor issue” on its washing machine codes page, and on other models the same fault appears as EA or EB. The numbered versions all point to the motor; Samsung does not publish separate owner advice for each one.

There is one exception worth knowing. Samsung’s US support says that on some models 3E is a motor error and on others it is a voltage error, and tells owners to check the user manual for their model. If you have the manual, look up 3E in its error table before you book a repair.

Read the display carefully too. Samsung UK warns that 3 and E can look alike on its displays, and on some models E3 means an overflow error, not a motor fault. If your code reads E3, the fix is to reduce detergent and restart, not to call about the motor.

What Causes the Samsung Washing Machine 3E Error?

Samsung’s own support pages list these causes for its motor driving error. The first one is the only one an owner can put right:

  1. Too much laundry. Samsung says the motor may be overloaded by too much washing in the drum.
  2. A loose motor hall sensor connection. The hall sensor tells the control board how fast the motor is turning. If its terminal is not connected, the board cannot read the motor.
  3. A foreign object in the motor. Samsung gives the example of a screw getting into the motor.
  4. A loose terminal on the control board housing.
  5. A faulty control board (PBA).

Causes 2 to 5 are all inside the machine, so they need an engineer to diagnose.

How Do You Fix the 3E Error Yourself?

  1. Switch off at the mains and unplug. Samsung UK says to switch off at the mains and wait 1 minute. Other Samsung regions suggest 30 seconds or 2 to 3 minutes, so a full minute or more is fine.
  2. Reduce the load. If the drum was packed full, or you were washing a heavy item such as a duvet or a pile of wet towels, take some items out once the door unlocks.
  3. Check the power supply. Plug the machine directly into a wall socket rather than an extension lead. Samsung’s advice for its supply voltage code is to check the cord and avoid extension cables, and the same check makes sense here.
  4. Restart the programme. Switch back on and start the cycle again. If 3E does not return, the fault was most likely a one off overload.

Safety: Stop here if 3E comes back after one reset with a lighter load. Do not remove the back panel, unplug the motor connectors or test the motor with a meter. The motor and control board run on mains voltage, and a washing machine drum is heavy. Leave diagnosis to a Samsung engineer or a qualified appliance technician.

When Should You Call an Engineer?

  • 3E reappears after a reset with a normal or small load. Samsung’s advice in this case is to contact its support team.
  • You hear grinding, knocking or rattling from the drum or underneath it.
  • The machine smells of burning, trips the electrics or the plug feels hot. Switch off at the wall and do not use it.
  • You think a coin or screw may have got past the drum. An engineer can remove it before it damages the motor.

If the machine is under guarantee, contact Samsung first and check your guarantee terms before booking anyone else. Note the exact code shown, for example 3E1 or 3E3, and the model number from the rating label, as these help the engineer bring the right parts.

How Can You Stop the 3E Error Coming Back?

  • Stay within the load limit. Check the maximum load for each programme in your manual. Load limits differ between programmes, so a full cotton load can overload a delicate cycle.
  • Empty pockets. Coins, keys and screws are the kind of foreign objects that can work their way out of the drum.
  • Use a wall socket rather than an extension lead or adaptor.
  • Wash single heavy items with a few towels so the weight is spread. An unbalanced drum shows a different code, covered in our Samsung UE error guide.

To see what each wash costs, put your machine’s wattage and unit rate into our electricity cost calculator. For water supply faults, see the Samsung 4C error guide.

Samsung 3E Error FAQs

How do I reset the 3E error on a Samsung washing machine?

Switch the machine off at the mains, wait about 1 minute, then switch it back on and start the programme again. Samsung UK gives this as the action for 3E. If the drum was overloaded, remove some items before restarting.

Can overloading cause the 3E code?

Yes. Samsung lists an overloaded motor caused by too much laundry as one cause of its motor driving error. Take some items out, restart, and keep within the load limit for the programme you are using.

What is the difference between 3E1, 3E2, 3E3 and 3E4?

Samsung UK groups 3E1 to 3E4 with 3E as a motor issue and gives the same owner advice for all of them. The number helps an engineer narrow down the fault, so note the exact code before you call.

Can I still use my washing machine with a 3E error?

Only if a reset and a lighter load clear it. If 3E keeps returning, stop using the machine. Running it with a motor fault can cause further damage, and an object caught in the motor could make it worse.

Is 3E the same as E3 on a Samsung washer?

No. Samsung UK lists E3 as an overflow error and 3E as a motor issue. The characters look similar on the display, so read the code carefully and check your manual before following any fix.

Does the 3E error mean the motor needs replacing?

Not necessarily. Samsung lists loose sensor or board terminals, a foreign object and the control board among the causes, as well as the motor itself. An engineer needs to test the parts to find out which one is at fault.
