LG Washing Machine dE Error Code: Meaning and How to Fix It

What the LG dE, dE1 and dE2 door errors mean, the safe checks you can do yourself, how to reset the machine and when the lock needs an engineer.

The LG washing machine dE error means the door is not fully closed or the machine could not lock it, so the programme will not start or will stop before water goes in. On LG front loaders it is usually caused by a sleeve or sock trapped in the door seal, and in most cases you can clear it in a minute without any tools.

Quick answer: dE on an LG washing machine is a door error: the door is not closed properly or could not lock. LG says laundry caught between the door and the rubber seal is the usual cause. Push the laundry in, close the door firmly at the handle and restart. A torn seal or broken latch needs an LG engineer.

What Does the LG dE Error Code Mean?

dE is LG’s door error: the washing machine was started without its door properly closed, or the door lock did not engage. The machine will not fill or spin until the door is locked, because the lock is a safety interlock that stops the door opening while there is water or a moving drum inside.

LG uses a few versions of the code. Its UK help page on the door not closing groups dE, dE1 and dE2 together as door closing problems. LG’s front load code list adds more detail:

  • dE: the door was unable to lock. Some older models show E01 for the same fault.
  • dE1: the door is not closed properly, often because laundry is caught between the door and the gasket.
  • dE2: the door is closed but has not locked. Some older models show E30.

Key points: What Does the LG dE Error Code Mean?

On some LG laundry pairs with a small pedestal washer drawer underneath, dE1 or dE2 can refer to that drawer instead of the main door. If your machine has one, check that the drawer is pushed fully shut, and confirm the meaning in your model’s manual.

What Causes the dE Error?

Most dE errors are physical: something stops the door meeting the lock. In rough order of how often they occur:

  1. Laundry caught in the door seal. A cuff, sock or the corner of a towel sits between the rubber gasket and the door glass, so the door springs back slightly.
  2. Overloading. LG notes that a very full drum pushes laundry against the glass and can stop the door closing. Rearrange the load so the surface facing the door is flat.
  3. Closing the door at the wrong point. LG advises pushing the door near the handle on the right, where the lock sits, rather than at the top or bottom.
  4. A sagging door. LG says the door can sag if it is pushed at the top or bottom, or if heavy items are hung on it for long periods, so the hook no longer lines up with the lock.
  5. A torn or displaced door gasket. If the rubber seal is split or has come away from its rim, LG says a dE error can follow.
  6. A faulty door lock, latch or hinge. If the door closes cleanly and still will not lock, the lock assembly, the hook on the door or the wiring to the lock may have failed. This needs an engineer.

How Do You Fix the LG dE Error Yourself?

Work through these steps in order. They follow LG’s own guidance for front loaders. Never force the door open while the lock light is on or water is visible behind the glass.

  1. Switch off and unplug the machine. Do this before you run your hands around the seal.
  2. Open the door and look all the way round the gasket. Pull out anything caught in the fold of the rubber and push the laundry fully back into the drum so nothing touches the glass.
  3. Take out some laundry if the drum is packed. LG advises rearranging the load so the surface facing the door is even and flat.
  4. Check the seal and the door hook. Look for splits, a seal that has come off its rim, or a bent hook on the door. If you find damage, stop here and book a repair.
  5. Close the door properly. Push near the handle on the right until you hear a click. If the door looks like it has dropped, LG suggests lifting it slightly as you close it.
  6. Reset the machine. With the plug out, press and hold START/PAUSE for 5 seconds, as LG’s US support guide describes, then plug back in.
  7. Start a short programme. Listen for the lock clicking shut. If dE returns straight away with an empty drum and a firmly closed door, the fault is in the lock or latch.

Step by step: How Do You Fix the LG dE Error Yourself?

Safety: Stop at the outside of the machine. Do not remove panels, bend the door hook, bypass the lock or try to replace the gasket or interlock yourself. The door lock is a safety part that prevents the door opening on a spinning drum or hot water. If the steps above do not clear dE, unplug the machine and book an LG engineer or a qualified appliance technician.

When Should You Call an Engineer?

Call LG service or a qualified appliance engineer if any of these apply:

  • dE comes back with an empty drum after a full reset.
  • The door does not click when you close it, or it closes but never locks.
  • The gasket is torn, perished or has come away from the drum rim.
  • The door has visibly dropped on its hinge and lifting it does not help.
  • The door stays locked long after a programme has finished, or you see a burning smell or scorch marks near the lock.

If the machine is still under warranty, use LG’s service booking rather than a third party repair, so the warranty is not affected. We do not give repair prices here because we could not find a reliable published figure; ask for a quote before work starts.

The table lists LG front load codes as described in LG’s own support pages. Meanings can vary between models, so check your manual if your display differs.

How Can You Stop the dE Error Coming Back?

  • Load the drum loosely and check the seal before closing the door every time.
  • Close the door by pressing near the handle, never by slamming or pushing the top edge.
  • Do not hang bags, towels or wet washing on the open door; LG links this to sagging.
  • Wipe the gasket after washes and leave the door ajar so the seal dries. Fluff and grit in the fold can stop a tight close.
  • Fewer, fuller (but not packed) loads also cut running costs; our electricity cost calculator shows what each wash costs at your tariff.

LG Washing Machine De Error FAQs

What does dE mean on an LG washing machine?

dE is a door error. The machine has detected that the door is not fully closed or that the door lock could not engage, so it will not start the wash. Laundry caught in the rubber seal is the most common reason.

How do I reset my LG washing machine after a dE error?

Unplug the machine, press and hold START/PAUSE for 5 seconds, then plug it back in. Close the door firmly near the handle until it clicks and start a programme. If dE returns with the door shut properly, the lock needs checking.

What is the difference between dE, dE1 and dE2?

LG uses dE when the door could not lock, dE1 when the door is not closed properly and dE2 when the door is closed but has not locked. All three start with the same checks: clear the seal, close at the handle and reset.

Can I use my LG washing machine with a dE error?

No. The machine will not fill or spin until the door locks, and you should never try to bypass the interlock. Clear the cause and reset; if the error stays, book a repair before using the machine again.

Why does my LG washer say dE when the door is closed?

A thin item in the seal, a dropped door or a damaged gasket can leave the door a few millimetres short of the lock even when it looks shut. If none of those apply and dE persists, the door lock or latch has probably failed.

Is a dE error expensive to fix?

Often it costs nothing, because the cause is trapped laundry or how the door is closed. A faulty lock, hook or gasket is a parts and labour repair; check your warranty first and ask an LG engineer for a quote.
