The Vaillant F29 error code means the flame in your boiler went out while it was running and the boiler then failed to relight, so it has locked out. It often appears during cold snaps because of a frozen condensate pipe, or when the gas supply is interrupted, and both of those have safe checks a homeowner can make.
Quick answer: F29 on a Vaillant boiler means the flame was lost during operation and re-ignition failed. Check that other gas appliances work and, in freezing weather, thaw the condensate pipe with warm (not boiling) water. Then reset the boiler. Vaillant’s instructions say to call a qualified engineer if three resets do not solve it.

What Does the Vaillant F29 Error Code Mean?
F29 is a flame loss fault. Vaillant’s official boiler fault codes list describes it as an unsuccessful ignition following a flame loss during operation. On the display it usually appears as F.29.
In other words, the boiler had lit and was heating, then the flame disappeared. The boiler tried to relight it automatically, could not, and shut down for safety. The Vaillant ecoTEC plus operating instructions group F.28 and F.29 together as ignition faults that appear when the burner fails to ignite after repeated attempts.
F29 is closely related to F28. Vaillant describes F28 as no flame signal detected during the ignition phase, meaning the boiler never lit in the first place. With F29, it lit and then lost the flame. Many of the checks are the same.
What Causes the F29 Error?
The causes below come from Vaillant’s own guidance where available, and otherwise from causes named consistently by independent UK heating engineers’ guides. The first two are the ones a homeowner can check.
- Interrupted gas supply: the gas was cut off or the pressure dropped, for example a closed gas isolation valve, a prepayment meter out of credit, or a supply problem in your area.
- Frozen or blocked condensate pipe: Vaillant UK names F28 or F29 as the codes to look for when the condensate pipe has frozen. Water backs up inside the boiler and it shuts down.
- Flue problems: a blocked flue or flue gases being drawn back into the boiler.
- Ignition or flame sensing faults: a worn electrode, a faulty lead or a failing ignition transformer.
- Gas valve or circuit board faults, and electrical earthing problems inside the boiler.

How Do You Fix the F29 Error Yourself?
A homeowner can check the gas supply from the outside, thaw a frozen condensate pipe and reset the boiler. Vaillant’s operating instructions allow the reset, and its winter advice covers the condensate pipe. Work through the steps in order.
- Check other gas appliances. If you have a gas hob or fire, see whether it lights. If nothing works, the problem is the supply rather than the boiler.
- Check your meter. If you have a prepayment gas meter, make sure it has credit. Check that the gas isolation valve near the meter is in the open position; the Vaillant troubleshooting table lists a closed gas isolator as a cause of no heating or hot water.
- In freezing weather, check the condensate pipe. This is the plastic pipe, usually white or grey, that runs from the boiler to a drain outside. Vaillant says the frozen section is typically at the end of the pipe, just below the drain, or around a bend where insulation is thinnest. A gurgling sound from the boiler can also be a sign.
- Thaw it with warm water. Pour warm water along the frozen section, for example from a watering can, until the ice clears. Vaillant warns not to use boiling water, as it can crack the plastic pipe and damage the boiler. A hot water bottle held against the pipe also works.
- Reset the boiler. Press the reset button as described in your manual and wait to see whether it lights and stays lit.
- Limit your attempts. Vaillant’s operating instructions say that if you cannot resolve an ignition problem by resetting the boiler three times, you should consult a competent person.

Safety: Stop after three resets. Do not open the boiler casing, touch the gas valve, test gas pressure, or inspect the flue or ignition parts yourself. Vaillant UK says these faults are a case for an expert. Any work on gas appliances must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you smell gas, do not reset anything: leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
When Should You Call an Engineer?
Call a Gas Safe registered engineer if F29 remains after three resets, if your other gas appliances work normally but the boiler still locks out, or if the code keeps returning every few days. Those patterns point to a fault inside the boiler or flue rather than the supply.
If none of your gas appliances work and your meter has credit and the valve is open, contact your gas supplier or network operator about the supply. If the boiler is under a Vaillant guarantee, contact Vaillant or your installer before booking an engineer; the Vaillant UK fault codes page lists customer service on 0344 736 0049.
Which Vaillant Codes Are Related to F29?
This table uses Vaillant’s descriptions from its official fault code list, with what the homeowner can safely do for each one.
| Code | Vaillant’s description | Homeowner step |
|---|---|---|
| F29 | The ignition following a flame loss during operation was unsuccessful | Check gas supply and condensate pipe, reset up to three times |
| F28 | The flame signal was not detected during the ignition phase | Check gas supply and condensate pipe, reset up to three times |
| F27 | A flame signal has been detected while the burner is off | One reset, then Gas Safe engineer |
| F62 | The flame switch-off was detected after a delay | Gas Safe engineer |
| F25 | The flue gas temperature is too high | Gas Safe engineer |
| F22 | No or insufficient water in the product, or water pressure too low | Top up pressure; engineer if it returns |

How Can You Stop the F29 Error Coming Back?
Most repeat F29 faults in winter can be prevented by protecting the condensate pipe. Vaillant’s winter condensate pipe advice recommends insulating it with pipe lagging from a DIY store, cut to fit the exposed length, and keeping the boiler in regular use during freezing weather.
- Fit lagging to the outside section of the condensate pipe before winter.
- Keep the heating running at a low level during very cold spells rather than switching it off completely.
- Keep prepayment meters topped up, especially before weekends and holidays.
- Keep the flue terminal outside clear of plants, sheds and stored items.
- Book an annual service with a Gas Safe registered engineer, which Vaillant recommends, so the burner, ignition parts and flue are inspected.
Keeping the heating on low in a cold spell costs money, so it is worth checking the impact with our gas bill calculator. If your radiators struggle to heat the house once the boiler is working, the radiator size calculator shows whether they are big enough for each room.
Vaillant F29 Error Code FAQs
How many times can I reset a Vaillant boiler with F29?
Vaillant’s operating instructions say that if you cannot solve an ignition problem by resetting the boiler three times, you should consult a competent person. In the UK, that means a Gas Safe registered engineer. Check the gas supply and condensate pipe before each attempt.
Can a frozen condensate pipe cause F29?
Yes. Vaillant UK lists F28 or F29 as the codes to look for when the condensate pipe has frozen. Thaw the frozen section with warm, not boiling, water, then reset the boiler using the method in your manual.
What is the difference between Vaillant F28 and F29?
F28 means the boiler did not detect a flame during ignition, so it never lit. F29 means the boiler lit, lost its flame while running, and could not relight. Both share common causes such as gas supply problems and frozen condensate pipes.
Can a prepayment meter cause the F29 error?
Yes, if the meter runs out of credit while the boiler is firing, the gas stops and the flame goes out. Once you top up, check that your hob or other gas appliances work, then reset the boiler.
Should I use boiling water on a frozen condensate pipe?
No. Vaillant warns that boiling water can crack the plastic condensate pipe and damage the boiler. Use warm water poured from a watering can or jug, or hold a hot water bottle against the pipe until the ice clears.
Why does F29 keep coming back?
If the gas supply is fine and the condensate pipe is clear, a recurring F29 usually points to a fault inside the boiler or flue, such as an ignition part, the gas valve or a flue problem. A Gas Safe registered engineer needs to diagnose it.
