The Vaillant F54 error code means a gas supply fault on older Vaillant ecoTEC plus boilers: the boiler is getting no gas, or too little gas pressure, to light safely. It usually appears with F28 or F29, and the boiler stops heating and hot water until the supply problem is found.
Quick answer: F54 on a Vaillant ecoTEC plus means not enough gas is reaching the boiler. Check the gas isolator is open, other gas appliances work and any prepayment meter has credit, then reset up to three times. If F54 returns, call a Gas Safe registered engineer, because the gas valve and supply are not homeowner jobs.

What Does the Vaillant F54 Error Code Mean?
F54 is a gas supply fault: the boiler has asked for gas and the burner could not get enough of it.
In the installation and maintenance manual for the older ecoTEC plus range (models 612, 615, 618, 624, 630, 637, 824, 831 and 837), Vaillant lists F.54 as a gas pressure fault that shows “in combination with F.28/F.29”. The manual gives the meaning as no or too little gas supply pressure, or the gas valve closed, and the possible causes as a defective gas valve or a defective cable harness to the gas valve.
F54 does not appear on Vaillant’s current UK boiler fault codes list, and it is missing from the fault tables of newer models we checked, such as the HOME combi. On newer Vaillant boilers, the same kind of problem tends to show as F28, where Vaillant lists “gas isolator cock closed” and “gas connection pressure too low” among the causes. If your boiler is not an older ecoTEC plus, check your model’s manual for the exact meaning.
What Causes the F54 Error?
Most F54 faults start outside the boiler, with the gas supply itself, before the boiler’s own parts are suspected.
- Gas isolator closed: the gas valve under the boiler has been turned off, for example after other work in the home. Vaillant’s operating instructions tell users to check that the gas stopcock is open.
- No gas to the property: a prepayment meter out of credit, or a supply interruption in your street.
- Low gas supply pressure: the manual lists “no or too little gas supply pressure”. This can come from the meter, the regulator or undersized pipework, and only an engineer can test it.
- Faulty gas valve: the valve inside the boiler does not open properly.
- Damaged gas valve wiring: Vaillant names a defective cable harness to the gas valve as a cause.

How Do You Fix the F54 Error Yourself?
A homeowner can safely check the gas supply and reset the boiler, and nothing more. Follow these steps in order.
- Check for a gas smell first. If you smell gas, do not reset the boiler. Follow the gas emergency steps below.
- Test another gas appliance. Try a gas hob or gas fire. If nothing lights, the problem is your gas supply, not the boiler.
- Check your meter. On a prepayment meter, check there is credit and any emergency credit has been used up or topped up. If your street has no gas, contact your supplier or the gas emergency line.
- Check the gas isolator on the boiler is open. Vaillant’s operating instructions say to ensure the gas isolator cock is fully open. Only look at its position; do not take anything apart.
- Reset the boiler. Vaillant’s ecoTEC plus operating instructions say to press the reset button for longer than three seconds, with a maximum of three repetitions.
- Write down the codes. If F54 comes back, note any F28 or F29 shown with it and when it happens. This helps the engineer.

Safety: Stop after three resets. Do not remove the boiler casing, adjust the gas valve, test gas pressure or touch wiring. HSE says anyone employed to work on gas appliances in a home must be a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you smell gas, open doors and windows, do not use switches or naked flames, leave the building and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
When Should You Call an Engineer?
Call a Gas Safe registered engineer if F54 returns after three resets, or straight away if your other gas appliances work but the boiler still shows F54. That points to the gas valve, its wiring or the gas pressure at the boiler, which the Health and Safety Executive says only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on.
Also call if the code comes back every few days, if you hear the boiler try to light and fail repeatedly, or if your boiler is still under guarantee, because Vaillant directs boiler owners to its customer service or an installer for fault codes. Tell the engineer the model, the codes shown together, and what you have already checked.
Vaillant Codes Linked to Gas and Ignition
F54 is one of several Vaillant codes about gas, ignition and flame. The table uses Vaillant’s own wording from its UK fault codes page and installation manuals.
| Code | Vaillant meaning | Homeowner check | Who fixes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| F22 | Low water pressure in the system | Check gauge, top up via filling loop | Homeowner, engineer if it keeps dropping |
| F27 | A flame signal detected while the burner is off | None | Gas Safe engineer |
| F28 | Flame signal not detected during the ignition phase | Gas isolator open, reset up to 3 times | Gas Safe engineer if it returns |
| F29 | Ignition after a flame loss during operation was unsuccessful | Gas supply, reset up to 3 times | Gas Safe engineer if it returns |
| F54 | Gas supply pressure fault (older ecoTEC plus), with F28 or F29 | Other gas appliances, meter, isolator, reset | Gas Safe engineer if it returns |
| F61 | Gas valve control fault | None | Gas Safe engineer |
| F62 | Flame switch-off detected after a delay | None | Gas Safe engineer |
If you are seeing F22 instead, our guide on how to repressurise a combi boiler explains the filling loop steps.
How Can You Stop the F54 Error Coming Back?
You cannot prevent every supply problem, but a few habits make F54 less likely.
- Have the boiler serviced every year. HSE advises that gas appliances, flues and pipework are serviced at least annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer, who can check gas pressure at the boiler.
- Keep a prepayment meter topped up, especially in winter when the boiler uses more gas. Our gas bill calculator turns meter readings into kWh and cost, so you can plan top ups.
- Ask for the gas isolator to be checked after any kitchen, plumbing or meter work.
- Mention pipe size if you add appliances. A new gas hob or a larger boiler can lower the pressure the boiler sees. When replacing an old ecoTEC plus, the boiler size calculator gives a guide kW range to discuss with your installer.
Vaillant F54 Error Code FAQs
What does F54 mean on a Vaillant boiler?
On older Vaillant ecoTEC plus boilers, F54 means a gas supply fault. The boiler is getting no gas or too little gas pressure, or the gas valve is closed. It often appears together with F28 or F29.
Can I reset a Vaillant boiler showing F54?
Yes, after checking for a gas smell and checking your gas supply. Vaillant’s operating instructions say to hold reset for longer than three seconds, up to three times. If F54 returns, call a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Is F54 dangerous?
The code itself is a safety shutdown, so the boiler has stopped to protect you. It becomes urgent if you smell gas. In that case leave the building and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Why does my Vaillant show F54 and F28 together?
F28 means the boiler could not detect a flame when lighting. On older ecoTEC plus boilers, F54 alongside it tells the engineer that the likely reason is low or no gas supply pressure, rather than an ignition part.
Can a prepayment meter cause F54?
Yes. If the meter runs out of credit, no gas reaches the boiler and it cannot light. Check whether a gas hob works too. Top up, then reset the boiler once the supply is back.
Does F54 mean I need a new boiler?
Not usually. F54 often traces back to the gas supply, and where the boiler is at fault, Vaillant’s manual points to the gas valve or its wiring, which can be replaced. An engineer can advise once the cause is found.
